| REABSORBES VITAL SUBSTANCES THEREBY BALANCES BODY FLUIDS AND CHEMICALS |
- Function of renal tubules
- Reabsorption depends on both active and passive transport mechanisms
- PCT—all organic nutrients totally reabsorbed, most of sodium, obligatory water reabsorption, solvent drag allows passive movement of solutes
- Transport maximum exists for every substance except sodium—when transport mechanisms saturated additional material not reabsorbed and eliminated in urine
- Non-reabsorbed substances lack carriers or cannot diffuse through tubule cells
- Loop of Henle—water and electrolytes
- DCT and collecting duct—reabsorption regulated by hormones (aldosterone, ADH, ANP)
